ROLE SUMMARY
Provide senior-level systems engineering expertise within a delivery-focused team. This role involves hands-on contribution to the design, implementation, and operation of systems that support business services, ensuring they are reliable, secure, and production-ready.
PURPOSE
Contribute to the organisation’s mission by building and operating robust systems that enable business services. The role focuses on ensuring systems are dependable, secure, and scalable, while developing reusable patterns and self-service capabilities that allow development teams to safely manage infrastructure and runtime environments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as a senior, hands-on engineer in designing, building, and operating systems within the team’s scope.
- Apply deep expertise in a core focus area such as cloud platforms, runtime environments, developer enablement, databases, or networking.
- Ensure systems meet standards for reliability, performance, security, compliance, and recoverability.
- Take ownership of systems across their lifecycle (build and run), including monitoring, alerting, and incident response.
- Lead the investigation and resolution of system-related incidents.
- Design and maintain reusable infrastructure patterns and modules to support safe, consistent system provisioning.
- Enable development teams through self-service capabilities, balancing flexibility with appropriate controls.
- Operate reusable components as production systems, including versioning, documentation, and change management.
- Plan and implement system changes using structured change control and deployment practices.
- Use automation and version control to ensure safe and consistent system updates.
- Maintain and regularly validate backup, recovery, and resilience strategies.
- Identify risks, bottlenecks, compliance issues, and technical debt, and drive improvements.
- Collaborate with Software Engineers, QA Engineers, and Platform Engineers to align systems with application and business needs.
- Contribute to solution design discussions, ensuring operational considerations are addressed early.
- Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices in operations and change management.
- Balance delivery priorities with system stability, risk mitigation, and long-term sustainability.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- 8+ years of experience in systems engineering, platform engineering, or a related field.
- Strong systems engineering expertise, with deep knowledge in at least one core domain.
- Experience designing and operating reusable infrastructure (e.g., infrastructure-as-code, self-service platforms).
- Broad understanding of related system domains to support collaboration and incident response.
- Proven experience managing production systems and handling incidents effectively.
- Solid understanding of security, compliance, and operational risk management.
- Experience with change management and controlled deployments in live environments.
- Ability to automate infrastructure provisioning and system changes.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts and trade-offs clearly.
- Ability to work independently with accountability and sound judgment.
