Senior Structural Engineer – Power Transmission & Renewables (Tekla/Advance Steel)

 

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Structural Engineer to lead the design, analysis, and delivery of structural systems supporting high-voltage substations, OHL and Power Industry projects.This role focuses on the Structural aspects of Substations and Energy Industry infrastructure, including HV equipment steel supports, OHL Towers, cable trenches, and foundations.

The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in structural engineering for substations, power industry projects, and renewable energy facilities, and is proficient in AutoCAD and structural software’s. Strong, hands-on experience in Tekla Structures and Advance Steel for 3D modelling, detailing, and fabrication deliverables is mandatory, while experience with STAAD.Pro and PLS Pole/Tower for structural analysis and design calculations is considered an advantage. The position requires the ability to manage technical design packages, provide mentorship, and collaborate across disciplines to deliver safe, efficient, and constructible designs for substation, energy, and renewable projects.

Key Responsibilities

1.    Structural Design & Analysis

  • Deliver design of substation steel structures, gantries, towers, bus supports, equipment foundations, control buildings, and ancillary facilities.

  • Perform structural analysis and design calculations for concrete and steel per IEC, Eurocodes, ACI, AISC, and other applicable standards.

  • Prepare and review construction drawings, general arrangements, and detailed structural layouts using AutoCAD and Structural software’s.

  • Develop detailed 3D models and fabrication/shop drawings for substation and power/renewable structures using Tekla Structures and Advance Steel, including connections, bills of quantities, and clash checks.

  • Develop foundation design packages for transformers, circuit breakers, GIS/HIS equipment, cable support systems, and renewable plant structures (e.g., inverter platforms, transformer foundations, cable bridges).

  • Integrate substation civil/structural design with electrical layouts, geotechnical constraints, renewable plant layouts, and site development requirements.

2.    Leadership & Project Management

  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to structural engineers and CAD/BIM designers.

  • Manage project deliverables, schedules, and budgets for structural engineering scopes.

  • Support business development activities, including proposals, cost estimation, and scope definition for substation, power, and renewable projects.

  • Represent the structural engineering function in client meetings, design reviews, and regulatory coordination.

3.    Construction & Field Support

  • Provide engineering support during construction, installation, and commissioning

  • Review and respond to RFIs, site queries, ensuring as-built compliance.

  • Conduct constructability reviews and ensure designs are practical, safe, and cost-effective.

4.    Documentation & QA/QC

  • Review structural calculation reports, bills of quantities, and construction documentation.

  • Ensure designs comply with company QA/QC procedures and client standards.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary coordination, and internal audits to maintain technical excellence.

5.    Innovation & Standards Development

  • Contribute to the development of standard design libraries, templates, and automatization of design processes for the structural team.

  • Assess and integrate new materials and technologies to improve safety, resiliency, and sustainability.

  • Stay up to date with industry standards, codes, and best practices relevant to substation and power/renewable structural design.

 

 

Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • 7+ years of experience in structural engineering including high-voltage substations, with demonstrable project involvement in power industry and/or renewable energy projects.

  • Proven experience with steel and concrete design, structural analysis, and substation-specific structures.

  • Significant structural design and detailing experience on power industry projects (e.g., transmission/distribution, conventional generation) and renewable projects (e.g., wind, solar, BESS) is highly valued.

  • Advanced, hands-on experience with Tekla Structures and Advance Steel for 3D modelling, detailing, and preparation of fabrication drawings and material take-offs.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for delivering Foundation layouts and Structural drawings.

  • Strong knowledge of international standards (IEC, ACI, AISC, Eurocodes, IEEE, NFPA).

  • Solid understanding of substation layout requirements, electrical clearance constraints, and equipment integration.

Nice to have:

  • Knowledge of seismic, wind, and extreme weather design for substation and power/renewable structures.

  • Experience with Over Head Lines and PLS CADD, PLS Pole and Tower

  • Familiarity with utility/client standards from major power companies.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Chartered Engineer status.

  • Experience with BIM tools

  • Experience with STAAD.Pro for structural analysis and with other detailing tools in addition to Tekla and Advance Steel is considered an asset.
