Job description
In this Associate Director leadership role in the Generation and Storage team, you will champion technical excellence - leading owners’ engineering and design projects across Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). Alongside a strong, established team of project managers and multidisciplinary specialists, you will be enhancing AECOM’s technical reputation across the energy sector. No day will be the same as you provide technical leadership across utility-scale wind, solar, battery (BESS) and hybrid projects from pre-feasibility through construction and commissioning, all while working with our clients to deliver high-quality outcomes.
You will be working closely with clients and owners, with the remit to help them develop complex, innovative and varied technical solutions to meet their needs. You will also be working across project stages, leading the development of documentation and reviewing inputs across concept, specification development, procurement, design, construction and commissioning. Your role includes communicating complex technical concepts and solutions in a way that a variety of project stakeholders can understand while also working with client stakeholders to understand their technical, operational and maintenance requirements.
This fast-paced and innovative nature of projects will suit a technical leader looking to make a difference across major and complex projects where understanding client needs, balancing engineering concepts, and applying commercial judgement will be important to align with the project economic and design requirements. You will have scope to mentor, coach, and develop the next generation of engineers across the Generation and Storage teams. You will also be supported to explore and develop your own abilities in a rapidly changing renewables landscape, learning from across AECOM’s global technical network of multidisciplinary specialists.
Key role responsibilities include:
- Providing technical leadership and solutions including with clients as Owner’s Engineer (OE), being the local ‘go-to’ for technical assurance, technical verification and review requirements.
- Supporting internal project delivery excellence across technical verification, design governance, risk management, and working within project commercial requirements.
- Building client relationships as a trusted advisor including running workshops with client technical teams, external stakeholders and contractors.
- Contributing to business development processes, developing technical methodologies, resourcing estimates and providing schedule inputs into project proposals and presentations.
- Supporting the junior team members through planning and developing design and OE documentation, such as reports, drawings, records and technical material, and providing quality reviews upon completion.
- Working with the local team and manager, as well as the ANZ-wide Generation and Storage team, to support technical learning, mentoring and development of others and their technical abilities in the renewable engineering disciplines.
- Contributing technical expertise within the AECOM’s ANZ-wide Generation and Storage team, as well as our global technical specialist (TechEx) network.
- Championing delivery excellence and governance by maintaining AECOM’s high standards of quality, safety, digital innovation and client satisfaction.
- Leading by example with collaboration and operational efficiency, by leveraging enterprise workshare, implementing change initiatives, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
To be successful in this role, you will be an experienced technical leader across Renewable Energy and electrical engineering, known for your knowledge of engineering and grid requirements, your problem-solving ability, and deep experience across delivery and commissioning.
Experience across a variety of utility-scale renewable projects (ideally including wind, solar, BESS and hybrid) will be important for success in this role, especially a track record of very diverse project types and delivery models, site requirements, and demonstrated experience of complex delivery interfaces.
The following qualifications and experience are highly desired, but if you don’t tick all the boxes, you could still be a perfect fit for this role. Please apply, as all applications will be considered.
- Recognised for your technical and project engineering skill, with 15+ years of experience in Renewable Engineering, preferably with an electrical engineering background.
- Proven ability to manage a variety of projects from concept to delivery, ensuring technical excellence, consistent high-quality outcomes, and client satisfaction throughout all project stages.
- Registration on the National Engineering Register in Australia (such as RPEV or RPEQ) will be required, ideally supported by a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) designation.
- Client relationship and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain positive client relationships as a trusted advisor with internal and client expert technical teams.
- Ability to provide commercial judgement and pragmatism, understanding design and build cost, risk and schedule considerations for clients.
- A passion for mentoring and the development of others’ Renewable Engineering technical abilities, helping the next generation of AECOM’s Generation and Storage team to build their careers.
