Heavy Equipment Operator / Excavator (Pipe Crew)

A well‑established electrical contractor is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to join our pipe crew. This is a long‑term, full‑time role for a skilled operator looking to grow with a team‑oriented company. Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Operator will perform excavation, trenching, grading, and underground utility installation. Candidates must be proficient with hydraulic excavators and related equipment and able to work safely and efficiently in outdoor construction environments.

Required Experience

• Proficient with heavy equipment including mini to large excavators, Lulls, forklifts, and boom equipment
• Foundation excavation & backfill
• Underground utilities: installation of precast structures, pipe, fittings, and trench prep
• Finish grading
• 10+ years of heavy equipment operation experience (Required)

Responsibilities

• Arrive on time and ready to work; maintain reliable transportation
• Participate in daily safety/work plan meetings
• Complete daily equipment inspections and safety checklists
• Maintain the overall condition and cleanliness of assigned machinery
• Report equipment damage or issues to the equipment manager
• Assist with field maintenance as needed
• Work cohesively with crew members and contribute to a safe jobsite

Core Duties

• Safely operate hydraulic excavators for trenching and pipe installation
• Excavate trenches to OSHA standards
• Dig trenches on grade for conduit, precast bases, manholes, handholes, and utilities
• Perform proper rigging and lifting for pipe, precast bases, manholes, and drainage structures
• Understand backfilling and compaction principles
• Perform daily machine inspections and report faults
• Clean cabs, tracks, and grease equipment at the end of each shift

Requirements

• Valid Driver’s License
• Reliable transportation
• Minimum 2 years of heavy equipment experience (10 preferred)
• Ability to communicate effectively with crew members
• Ability to lift 75+ lbs and work outdoors in variable weather (hot, cold, wet, dusty, noisy)
• Must speak English and follow instructions clearly
• Physical ability to sit, stand, and walk as required

Preferred Certifications

• OSHA 10 (Required)
• Rigging Certification
• Confined Space Certification
• First Aid/CPR
• Competent Person – Trench Excavation/Shoring
