Job Purpose:
This position This job family consists of three levels of Law Specialists assigned to the Office of General Counsel. The three levels are distinguished by leadership skills, substantive experience, the degree of independent discretion and responsibility, proficiency within a defined legal specialty or process, complexity and risk of assigned projects, and degree of supervision under which work is completed. Specific responsibilities vary depending on the specialty or process of the attorney(s) to whom they report.
The Law Specialists work with lawyers in the Office of General Counsel in the delivery of legal services. The Law Specialists have independent responsibility in actively managing a caseload and/or division assignments consistent with the ethical rules governing the practice of law and, when making legal decisions or giving legal advice, in consultation with a VP Associate General Counsel or his/her designee. The work requires substantive legal knowledge, creativity in problem solving and using independent discretion and independent judgment. Examples of responsibilities include retaining and directing retained counsel in assigned lawsuits or on assigned projects, communicating legal advice, monitoring compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, identifying legal issues, doing legal research, preparing and presenting drafts of legal documents, and preparing and presenting educational seminars.
The Law Specialist III is distinguished by having more substantive experience, being a leader and mentor to the Law Specialist II and Law Specialist I and having significant and often independent accountability for managing a caseload and assigned projects with higher risk, higher exposure, more complex, novel, and strategic legal issues, transactions, or litigation. The Law Specialist III is also identified as being a resource expert in one or more major legal process/specialty areas.
Job Responsibilities:
Provide leadership and mentoring to Senior Law Specialists and Law Specialists.
Actively manage a large caseload and/or division projects consistent with the ethical rules governing the practice of law and, when making legal decisions or giving legal advice, in consultation with a VP Associate General Counsel or his/her designee.
Use a wide range of legal or specialized knowledge to manage cases and assigned projects that present higher risk, higher exposure, more complex, novel, and strategic issues, transactions or litigation.
Develop areas of expertise and company knowledge to improve client service and meet department objectives. Act as a resource expert for legal process/specialty area(s).
Communicate critical information by conveying that information clearly, accurately, honestly and concisely in accordance with company and department policies and procedures.
Build and maintain positive internal and external customer relationships.
Provide services in a timely and efficient manner.
Formulate and evaluate plans, work processes and decisions from a cost-benefit and/or legal point of view.
Identify patterns and trends to recognize potential problems.
Use a systematic approach to problem solving and troubleshooting.

Job Requirements:
A four-year degree from a recognized paralegal program and five (5) years of experience; or an Associate Degree from a recognized paralegal program and seven (7) years of legal experience; or, a combination of nine or more years of college education, paralegal certification and work experience in a legal office/work environment related to legal area of responsibility.
Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor others.
Ability to understand and apply working knowledge of tort, contract, insurance law, insurance terminology and coverages, and the rules of civil procedure.
Demonstrated skills and experience in performing technical legal research and interpreting laws and regulations.
Demonstrated ability to listen and communicate as advocate, evaluator, negotiator and mediator, and ability to deal effectively with a variety of people both inside and outside the Company on a regular basis including members of the judiciary, opposing and co-counsel, insureds, expert and lay witnesses, agents, and Company employees at all levels.
Proficient with Microsoft Windows, Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Lexis.
Demonstrated ability to balance priorities under tight time constraints, and solve problems, exercise discretion, independence and make decisions.
Understands and demonstrates knowledge of legal ethics.
Willing to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:
Background in immigration law strongly preferred

Compensation may vary based on the job level, your geographic work location, position incentive plan and exemption status.
Base Salary Range:
$83,100.00 - $124,700.00
