AECOM’s Sustainability team, part of our Building Engineering Business Line, is recognised as a leader in sustainable development. Our specialists help clients design and deliver low-carbon, resilient, and sustainable buildings and communities.

We support projects across the entire building lifecycle—from early feasibility and planning through design, construction, and operation. Our work spans a wide range of sectors including housing, healthcare, education, commercial offices, retail, and hospitality, as well as advisory work for existing building portfolios.

Our projects range from supporting government policy on climate change and sustainability to developing energy and sustainability strategies for major developments and regeneration projects.

What We Do

Our team provides expertise in a wide range of sustainability services, including:

  • Net zero and low-carbon strategies for cities, masterplans, and developments
  • Energy strategies and energy statements to support planning applications
  • Circular economy and sustainability advisory services
  • Life cycle and embodied carbon assessments
  • Environmental certifications such as BREEAM, LEED, Home Quality Mark, and RICS Ska Rating
  • Health and wellbeing consultancy, including WELL Building Standard
  • Energy auditing and carbon management for existing buildings
  • Heat network and decentralised energy feasibility studies
  • Research and policy development relating to climate resilience and sustainable buildings

Example Projects

Our team works on a diverse range of high-profile developments and public sector projects. These include major regeneration schemes such as Wood Wharf, Silvertown Quays, and UCL East Campus.

We also support government organisations including the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, and the Climate Change Committee.

Our work includes sustainability advice for major developments such as the North West Cambridge Development and long-term infrastructure strategies for the Houses of Parliament.

Key Responsibilities

With support from the wider team, you may be involved in:

  • Assisting with environmental certifications such as BREEAM, DREAM, LEED, and Home Quality Mark (training provided)
  • Preparing circular economy and sustainability statements for development projects
  • Supporting life cycle and embodied carbon assessments
  • Developing energy and sustainability strategies to support design teams and planning applications
  • Contributing to research and policy work relating to sustainable buildings and climate resilience
  • Conducting energy audits and identifying efficiency improvements for existing buildings
  • Supporting heat network feasibility studies and concept designs

The successful candidate will be expected to work on defence and security-built environment projects.

  • Bachelor’s degree (BEng or MEng) in a relevant discipline such as engineering, environmental science, sustainability, or building services.
  • A Master’s degree in building sustainability, energy, environmental design, or a related field is desirable.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and apply it to practical sustainability solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present technical information.
  • High attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to manage a varied workload across multiple projects.
  • A demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in sustainable buildings, low-carbon design, and environmental performance.
  • Eligibility to obtain UK Security Clearance is required. This means applicants must be a UK sole national.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to work on defence and security-built environment projects
  • Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible since CVs will be reviewed, and candidates selected on a rolling recruitment basis for either immediate or advanced offer start.
  • Please include a covering letter with your application and provide all predicted and/or obtained academic grades and details of the dates you are able to work to/from and well as locations you would be interested in.
