Surgical Assistants perform a variety of patient care, transportation and related support tasksunder the supervision of a Registered Nurse or physician.

Job Specifications:
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent preferred
Completion of a Nurse Assistant program, Emergency Medical Technician program, Orthopedic Technician program or related program is preferred
Experience:
A minimum of the equivalent of one year full-time experience in a patient care position, such as a Nurse Aide, Hospital Technician or Orthopedic Technician, is required
License and Certifications:
Basic Life Support Required at hire
Certified Nurse Assistant OR Emergency Medical Technician required at hire
Integrative Agitation Management (IAM) Required within 30 days of hire
Prerequisite Skills:
Demonstrated technical competency in supplies and equipment utilized in a surgical/recovery environment
Proficiency in search/data entry and basic computer skills
Ability to set priorities and maintain a calm demeanor while working in a fastpaced atmosphere of conflicting demands
Ability to work tactfully and effectively with physicians, nurses and other hospital employees
Ability to interact professional and compassionately with patients and their families
Knowledge of principles of sterilization and aseptic technique

Employees in this position have access to protected health information. The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographics, date of service, insurance/billing, medical record summary information, and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description
Duties And Responsibilities:
Essential (Not Modifiable)
Lifts, moves or assists patients into and out of bed; positions patients
Transfers patients to and from transport devices and chairs
Pushes and pulls wheelchairs and gurneys occupied by patients
Maintains cleanliness and assembly of wheelchairs, gurneys, bed and standing scales, traction, etc.; inspects, maintains and inventories stock of wheelchairs, gurneys and all-purpose chairs
Weigh patients using appropriate scales. Records in chart
May take vital signs (BP/HR/RR/temperature)
Documents all patient care or tasks according to department and hospital policy
Assists nursing personnel with bed making, baths, feeding, showers, oral and back care, etc.
May stock rooms, sinks, carts, and closets with appropriate supplies and equipment; maintains rooms and other areas in a clean and orderly condition
May apply orthopedic soft goods. May assemble cast supplies and assist with application
May set up and apply traction. Monitors patients in traction on a regular basis, adjusting, modifying and charting appropriately
Places and removes bedpans and urinals when necessary
May apply external catheters, according to hospital policy
May perform post mortem care and take patients to morgue
Performs pre-operative preps

The posted pay range complies with applicable law and reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this role. Individual pay is set by skills, experience, qualifications, and internal/market equity, consistent with MarinHealth’s compensation philosophy. Positions covered by collective bargaining agreements are governed by those agreements.
