The Computing Products Engineering Department within Avionics is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to support the electronics packaging design and development of high-performance communication products. These include displays, computing electronics, and networking electronics which are installed on commercial airliners, business & regional jets, private jets, and certain military and dual-purpose aircraft.

What You Will Do:

  • Use and apply mechanical engineering principles and techniques to design, develop, document, verify, and support computing products.

  • Contribute to hardware engineering requirements capture and analysis in area of domain or functional expertise.

  • Perform mechanical packaging design and analysis to meet challenging environmental requirements.

  • Collaborate with other disciplines on development of circuit card designs (profile, stack up, thermal/vibration considerations)

  • Lead prototype build, verification and pre-qualification testing within a cross functional team

  • Work closely with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure defined requirements are consistently met in all phases of a product's lifecycle, including supporting integration, testing, qualification, and certification of the final product.

  • Serve as a mechanical design subject matter expert in proposal preparations, internal design and customer reviews. Ensure that development products are designed to meet the applicable requirements.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a University Degree and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience

  • Demonstrated experience supporting the full product lifecycle, including participation in bid and proposal, requirement capture, design development, and production support activities.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD). Includes working knowledge of model creation, interrogation with CAD tools like NX or Solidworks to support mechanical designs.

  • Experience with DO-160 and/or MIL-STD-810 environmental requirements

  • Proficiency with electronic product packaging requirements

  • Proficiency with the principles of heat transfer and fluid mechanics as it pertains to electronics cooling

  • Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and associated analysis methodologies

  • Familiarity with machined and sheet metal manufacturing methodologies

  • Knowledge of design to cost & manufacturability

  • Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Familiarity with product certification for the FAA

The salary range for this role is 107,500 USD - 204,500 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
