In Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.

Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a dynamic individual to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering’s academic team to provide academic advising, coaching, and mentoring to approximately 150-170 full-time Master of Science students, many of whom are international students. Our advisors work closely with our students to help them navigate their Carnegie Mellon degree program and to encourage and support them as they strive to achieve their academic and career goals. In addition to advising, the successful candidate will work closely with a team of faculty and staff across the entire graduate student lifecycle and play a vital role in community building.

Responsibilities:

  • Academic Advising & Student Success:
    • Advise and counsel full-time research and coursework MS students concerning academic progress, course selection, and degree requirements.
    • Manage academic status and lead remediation efforts for students experiencing academic difficulties.
    • Conduct comprehensive reviews to ensure adequate degree progress and perform certification of degree completion.

  • Program Operations & Admissions:
    • Support the MS admission process through application review and the development of on-boarding programs for new students.
    • Manage a team of MS Student Ambassadors to represent the department.
    • Manage and maintain accurate reports, records, and student files with high attention to detail

  • Community Building & Institutional Engagement:
    • Lead academic and co-curricular events and programming to facilitate community and cohort building for a diverse student body.
    • Participate in and assist with the planning and implementation of department activities, including new and continuing student programs.
    • Represent the MS program on department, college, and university level committees to improve administrative processes and the student experience.

  • Excellent analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interact with campus community and external customers.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Tools; Experience with Stellic and Slate preferred.
  • Ability to learn a variety of software applications.
  • Some evening and weekend hours are required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required. College level course work in academic advising or closely related areas is preferred.
  • Previous experience advising or working experience with college or graduate students is preferred. Experience working with international students is preferred.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
