Job Description

  

Job Summary:

The Cryocooler Development Test Engineer is responsible for assembling, optimizing, and characterizing the performance of cryocooler production and prototype units, as well as conducting failure analysis and root cause investigations on both prototype and production units. They will be responsible for designing, building and carrying out engineering tests in support of both prototype development and production failure or yield investigations. They will be responsible to work with production to support the transition of build and test processes to manufacturing, working across office, lab, and cleanroom environments. This position includes interfacing with scientific, electrical and manufacturing teams to develop sophisticated technology and innovative new products. Primary job duties include:

  • Designing and building test setups for prototyping, development and production support
  • Creating and/or modifying software as needed to run tests
  • Performing tests in support of engineering and production, including  data analysis, reports, and feedback as requested
  • Documentation and interpretation of test results
  • Assembly of cryogenic cooler prototypes
  • Inspection of cryocooler piece parts and sub-assemblies.
  • Experimental parameter optimization
  • Maintain Equipment Usage Log Sheets, Charts, Schedules, Repair Requisitions & Equipment Operating Instructions
  • Root Cause Failure Analysis of prototypes and production coolers including proper documentation.
  • Documentation for travelers and computer WIP tracking.
  • Optimization of cooler assembly processes & tooling.
  • Work with teams including System Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Cryocooler Manufacturing to define test and assembly processes.
  • Provides support to Cryocooler Manufacturing to solve engineering problems related to production or test systems.
  • Assists Design Engineering during the product development phase to assure a smooth transition to Cryocooler Manufacturing
  • Training and support of cryocooler production line technicians.

  • Strong Organization, Planning & Execution skills required to ensure adherence to detailed Engineering design processes and documentation and to meet schedule requirements.
  • High energy, proactive orientation; comfortable in a dynamic, fast paced environment.

Knowledge and experience in the following required:

  • Assembly and testing of precision electro-mechanical assemblies
  • Knowledge of instrumentation, test fixturing, and electronics relevant to cryogenic coolers
  • Test software development/programming skills-  Python, Matlab, Labview (able to make measurements, log data, and command instruments)
  • Able to read and work to technical drawings
  • Use of Metrology equipment (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators)
  • Working knowledge and practical/hands on experience with evaluation, assembly and testing of hardware
  • Experience directing and working with production to support builds and develop build processes.
  • Experience with cryogenic and electromechanical instrumentation and test equipment

Education and Experience

  • Basic computer skills – Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Minimum AA degree in Mechanical assembly, Physical Science, or equivalent experience working in an Engineering environment desired
  • Machine shop experience (CNC lathe, mill) desired
  • 3D CAD modeling, experience with SolidWorks desired
  • Previous experience in the infrared industry desired

Other Notes

Some domestic travel to customer sites and to test ranges may be required (5%).

Salary Range:

$90,800.00-$121,100.000

The anticipated salary range listed for this role is only an estimate. Actual compensation for successful candidates is carefully determined based on several factors including, but not limited to, location, local regulations (such as minimum wage), education/training, work experience, key skills, and type of position.
