Austin Energy Careers in Energy Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to learn about the energy industry as a public power utility by working with passionate, dedicated professionals. As an intern, you will work side by side with some of our critical projects to gain experience in your desired field. You will be assigned a mentor and leader who will help you understand our role as a municipally owned utility for the City of Austin and take your skills to the next level. As an intern working with Power Production, you will be assigned to work in one of our business units that is related to your degree plan, such as: working on small plant projects, teaming up with Operations and Maintenance for daily work, learning about summer run times and summer plant issues. May assist with engineering analysis and project coordination. Intern would work under a senior engineer at AE HQ and at Power Plants. In addition to day-to-day work assignments, interns will be assigned a unique project(s) to complete during their time with us. At the end of the program, interns will give a formal presentation describing their project and outcomes.

- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university undergraduate degree program, with some advanced coursework related to the internship program.

Student Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be enrolled full-time and classified as Junior, Senior, Graduate student or recent graduate within the last year (May 2025 - current) of an accredited university or college.
- Must have completed a minimum of 60 college semester hours.
- Must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale as an undergrad, post grad or recent grad.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical, Controls, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering.
- Completion of foundational coursework in circuits, thermodynamics, mechanics, controls, or related subjects.
- Basic understanding of power generation systems, industrial equipment, or plant operations.
- Familiarity with engineering analysis tools (such as Excel, AutoCAD, MATLAB, or similar software).
- Ability to learn to read and interpret electrical schematics, one‑line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail.
- Experience from school projects, labs, or prior internships involving troubleshooting, data analysis, or design.
- Ability to work closely with engineers, operators, and maintenance crews in an industrial environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, especially for documenting work and presenting findings.
- Interest in hands-on field work in operating power plants.
- Willingness to travel between Austin-area sites as needed.
- Ability to follow safety protocols and work effectively in active plant and equipment areas.

The 2026 Austin Energy Summer Internship Program will start on June 1, 2026, and run until July 24, 2026. You must commit to working Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm in the office from June 1, 2026, through July 24, 2026. Those who cannot commit to this schedule will not be considered for this year’s program.

STEM Undergraduate $22-$24
STEM Graduate $24-$26
