Job description

Biotherapeutics and Genetic Medicine (BGM), a part of Discovery Research within AbbVie’s R&D, is a global organization dedicated to the discovery and optimization of innovative drug candidate molecules for biotherapeutic modalities (monoclonal antibodies, multispecifics, proteins, conjugates, etc.) and genetic medicines (AAV, LNPs, siRNA, etc.) across all therapeutic areas.

We are seeking a highly motivated and forward-thinking scientist with demonstrated expertise in data engineering to develop and optimize automated lab data capture workflows, as well as create dynamic visualization dashboards supporting biologics discovery.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaboratively design digital workflows or tools to streamline biologics discovery and evaluate improvements in operational efficiency
  • Test software solutions and identify opportunities for iterative improvements
  • Proactively identify scientist needs that further our digital transformation strategy and propose solutions to meet them
  • Pilot new software and AI tools to evaluate utility for BGM
  • Implement standard analyses and visualizations that balance customization and increased efficiency
  • Represent BGM to Informatics and external software vendor providers as a technical expert.
  • Collaborate across groups with different priorities
  • Understand and communicate nuance of wet-lab workflows to enable integrated, harmonized data capture.
  • Proactively communicate roadblocks and identify potential paths forward
  • Communicate impact, including workflow efficiency gains at internal and external forums

  • BS or MS degree in a related scientific discipline or bioinformatics, with typically 3+ (BS) or 0+ (MS) years of experience.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and genetics and hands-on laboratory experience in this area.
  • Hands-on experience with commonly used R&D informatics platforms (e.g., SnapGene, Geneious, Dotmatics, Genedata Biologics, Pipebio, Benchling)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, SQL, and Python, or R
  • Demonstrated expertise in retrieving, preprocessing, and managing large datasets from databases
  • Proven ability to develop interactive data visualizations and dashboards (experience with Power BI, Tableau, D3.js, or Spotfire preferred)
  • Experience with the design of multi-specific antibodies
  • Experience working cross-functionally to ensure that workflows serve the needs of lab scientist
  • Experience with the integration and automation of laboratory instrumentation for data acquisition

Preferred:

  • Practical experience utilizing relevant programming libraries and frameworks for custom application development (such as Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Streamlit)
  • Familiarity with the antibody or genetic medicine R&D and drug discovery process
