The North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys is seeking a highly motivated, service-oriented professional to serve in a legal assistant role.
As a Legal Assistant with the Conference of District Attorneys, you will provide critical support to Resource Prosecutors who assist District Attorneys’ Offices across North Carolina. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to complex criminal prosecutions, including homicides, special victim cases, and major felony offenses, while supporting a service-oriented mission that strengthens prosecution statewide.

In this role, you will:
Work alongside experienced Resource Prosecutors handling complex and high-profile cases
Engage with District Attorney offices, law enforcement agencies, and allied professionals across North Carolina
Contribute to casework that directly impacts community safety and victim justice
Your work will help ensure that prosecutors have the organization, resources, and support necessary to effectively pursue justice.
Key Responsibilities:
Legal & Case Support
Provide direct support to Resource Prosecutors in the preparation and management of complex criminal cases, including homicide, sexual assault, child abuse, domestic violence, and other felony matters
Assist in trial preparation, including organizing case files, exhibits, discovery, and witness materials
Draft, proofread, and format legal documents, correspondence, and case-related materials with a high level of accuracy
Maintain and organize case files across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring consistency and accessibility
Case Coordination & Investigative Support
Coordinate with District Attorney offices, law enforcement agencies, and forensic professionals to obtain reports, records, and evidentiary materials
Review, organize, and manage discovery, including digital evidence such as body-worn camera footage and forensic reports
Assist in developing case summaries, timelines, and organizational tools to support prosecutorial strategy
Track case activity and assist in ensuring timely case progression
Statewide Collaboration & Service
Serve as a point of contact for District Attorney offices and partner agencies seeking assistance from Resource Prosecutors
Communicate professionally and effectively with prosecutors, investigators, and allied professionals across the state
Support the Conference’s mission by providing responsive, service-oriented assistance to stakeholders
Administrative & Operational Support
Manage scheduling, travel arrangements, and logistics for Resource Prosecutors
Coordinate meetings, trainings, and case-related activities
Maintain organized electronic and physical filing systems
Assist with preparation of training materials and resources for statewide use
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Knowledge of:
Criminal court processes, legal terminology, and procedures
Case management systems and legal technology (e.g., Odyssey, CJLEADS, Axon preferred)

Skill in:
Strong organizational and time management skills
Drafting and formatting legal documents with precision
Use of Microsoft Office and other legal support tools
Ability to:
Manage multiple priorities across different jurisdictions in a fast-paced environment
Communicate effectively with a wide range of professionals
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in handling sensitive information
Work collaboratively as part of a team committed to service and excellence

Minimum Education and Experience
Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Graduation from high school, or and equivalency certificate, and two years of legal/secretarial experience.
Management Preferences:
- Experience in a District Attorney’s Office or similar legal environment
- Experience supporting complex criminal litigation
- Familiarity with multi-agency coordination and statewide or regional work
