Lead AI Safety Engineer for Autonomous Vehicles: Technical Lead
The Safety Assurance for Effective Autonomous Driving Software (SAFE ADS) department is a core part of GM's Global Product Safety, System, and Certification (GPSSC) organization. Our mission is to empower GM to deliver reliable automated driving products. As the leading authority on automated driving system (ADS) safety, SAFE ADS unites experts across the company to create a comprehensive safety case, including safety performance indicators for GM's automated driving technologies.
GM envisions a future with zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion—and ensuring the safety of autonomous vehicles is crucial to achieving that vision.
The Role
The AV Safety Strategy and Assessment team is in search of a Technical Leader in AI Safety who possesses extensive experience in the complete development lifecycle of AI-driven automated driving systems (ADS). In this role, you will be instrumental in shaping GM's AI safety strategy. This position demands substantial expertise in technology development and validation of AI models particularly for safety-critical applications. The ideal candidate will greatly impact the advancement of safety through innovative solutions.
As the Lead AI Safety Engineer for AV, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional partners and stakeholders to define safety strategies and criteria for AI/ML based ADS features. Your role will also entail understanding challenges, driving collaborative AI/ML solutions, and assessing the safety of models and environments. In addition, you will offer safety guidance to teams of AI/ML developers and system engineers, championing GM's AI safety case framework while ensuring the safe deployment of AI-enabled ADS technologies.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
- Lead the development of AI safety strategies for ADS and establish engineering guidelines and criteria for safety.
- Engage actively with partners to provide technical expertise that informs leadership decisions and take ownership of key technical projects.
- Define GM's strategy for AI safety standards, engaging with external bodies to influence evolving standards while establishing GM's leadership role in the autonomous vehicle ecosystem.
- Support regulatory frameworks and policy discussions concerning AI safety in critical systems.
- Create assurance plans and processes to evaluate AI-related safety case evidence and verify compliance with safety criteria.
- Provide AI expertise and safety guidance within Global Product Safety, Systems, and Certification functions.
- Identify and pursue methods to enhance the effectiveness and quality of safety endeavors using AI methodologies.
- Mentor and develop team members, promoting a culture of technical excellence and continual learning.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
- 10+ years of experience in AI/ML, engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or a related field.
- Experience in the following:
- Machine Learning & AI: Comprehensive experience in building large-scale models with a focus on end-to-end validation. Familiarity with Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative AI, Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), SVM, XGBoost, Random Forest, Decision Trees, and Clustering.
- AI Standards and Evolving Regulations: Knowledge of ISO/PAS 8800, NIST AI Risk Management Framework, EU AI Act (2024-2027), and other relevant industry standards for autonomous vehicles, aerospace, and robotics.
- Programming & Frameworks: Proficiency in Python, R, Java, PySpark, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, SQL.
- Cloud & Big Data Platforms: Preferred experience with Microsoft Azure (Data Lake, Machine Learning, Databricks); AWS or Google Cloud Platform experience is a plus.
- Deployment & MLOps: Familiarity with MLflow, Model Monitoring & Versioning, Docker & Kubernetes, GitHub, Jira.
- Data Analysis & Visualization: Competence with Tableau, PowerBI, Pandas, NumPy.
- Proven track record in providing technical safety and validation leadership in AI/ML development and deployment.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills for effective teamwork.
- Strong problem-solving mindset with a proactive attitude towards learning and improvement.

- Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
- Relevant publications.
- Expertise in Large Language Models solutions from problem identification to cloud deployment that have driven substantial business value.
- Experience with generative AI solutions developed and deployed in production with significant business impact.
Compensation: The salary for this role ranges from $250,600 to $384,600, and offers incentive pay based on company and individual performance.
