Job description

Responsible for managing the operational activities, projects, and team members within the Clinical Operations (Bed Management) Department. Works collaboratively with multiple teams at all AHS facilities, including external partners and vendors. Acts as the System Operational liaison for defined regions/hospitals. Primary responsibilities include: strategic oversight and operational leadership of hospital-wide patient flow, including bed assignment, patient transport, and inter-facility transfers.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Leadership & Strategy

a. Direct and manage the Bed Management team, including supervisors, coordinators, and

transport staff.

b. Develop and implement system-wide strategies to optimize bed utilization and reduce

patient wait times.

c. Develop and implement strategic plans to improve patient throughput and reduce length

of stay.

d. Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for system-wide initiatives related to capacity

management.

a. Monitor and manage daily hospital census and bed availability.

b. Oversee daily bed huddles and manage escalation protocols during capacity constraints.

c. Coordinate intra- and inter-facility patient transfers.

d. Lead daily bed huddles and communicate “bed alert” protocols during high census

periods.

b. FTE analysis / Productivity Tracker Analysis

c. Monthly leadership meetings

' 4. Data Analysis/Reporting

a. Monitor real-time dashboards and analytics to track patient flow and capacity.

b. Analyze throughput metrics and trends to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for

improvement.

c. Ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards and other regulatory requirements.

d. Maintain and update policies and procedures related to bed management.

involved when appropriate

a. initiatives for Support Services departments at acute care sites

'6. Must be self-directed and an independent thinker able to manage complex assignments and

responsibilities.

'7. Partner with leadership to define system-wide initiative goals, objectives, timelines, and

budgets; assess outcome of completed initiatives

'8. Manages the efficient and effective use of operation resources – space, material, equipment,

staff, and information.

'9. Collaborate with leadership in assessing and executing strategies; conducts research,

identifies industry standards and new innovative practices for analysis; prepares operation

analysis, flow charts, presentations, and reports

'10. Emergency/Crisis Management & coordination as needed

'11. Other related duties as requested.

OVERSIGHT AND RESPSONSIBILTES

Oversee operations and works in close collaboration with the following departments/leaders:

  • Bed Management
  • Patient Transport
  • Nursing Leadership at the acute care sites

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • RN license required.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressive leadership experience in hospital operations or patient flow.
  • Proficiency in hospital information systems and patient flow tools (e.g., Epic, TeleTracking).
  • Strong knowledge of hospital operations, patient throughput, and regulatory standards.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and leadership skills.

COMPENTENCIES

  • Windows, Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio)
  • Power BI
  • Working knowledge of budget software and HR management software

LEVEL SPECIFIC

Director – 5-7 years of leadership/management experience – Master’s Degree or equivalent combination of education/experience. All legally/reasonably expected certifications needed for function and level. Works on issues of diverse scope where analysis of issues, data & processes requires multiple factor evaluation. (Individual Contributor – In some instances, may be the primary owner and responsible for a major process or significant portion of a complex functional discipline without direct reports.) Makes decisions on work processes, operational plans and schedules, to achieve objectives established by senior management; consequences of erroneous decisions or recommendations include critical delays and modifications to projects or operations with substantial expenditure of time, human resources, and funds, and may jeopardize future system activity. Assists leadership in setting strategic direction for key programs; Competent to work at very high levels in multiple knowledge areas or functions.
