Mechanical Engineer II
Location: Olive Township, MI (Onsite, 5 Days/Week) Onsite at a power generating facility (No remote option)
Duration: Until May 5th 2027 (with a possibility of extension)
Department: Mechanical Engineering / Operations Support
Reports To: Senior Engineering Manager / Plant Engineering Lead
Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineer II provides technical engineering support to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a power generation facility. The engineer maintains, evaluates, troubleshoots, and upgrades mechanical equipment and systems while working closely with Operations, Maintenance, Construction Contractors, and Vendors. This role also serves as a System Owner for multiple mechanical systems such as pumps, heat exchangers, water systems, boilers, steam turbines, and coal/ash handling equipment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare technical specifications, scopes of work, and procurement documents for mechanical equipment and materials.
- Estimate material, labor, and construction costs for project budgeting and planning.
- Compile and analyze data for mechanical engineering studies, system performance evaluations, and upgrade projects.
- Provide technical support to Operations, Maintenance, and other internal teams.
- Ensure compliance with engineering standards, codes, safety requirements, and customer specifications.
- Oversee and coordinate installation, construction, testing, maintenance, and documentation of mechanical systems.
- Prepare mechanical system specifications, engineering drawings, and technical reports.
- Apply engineering fundamentals such as thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and mass balance to system analysis and troubleshooting.
- Act as the primary point of contact for mechanical vendors, suppliers, and service providers.
- Manage implementation of upgrades, reliability improvements, and system modifications.
- Perform root-cause analysis and develop corrective actions for equipment failures.
- Support plant outage planning, inspections, and testing activities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Solid understanding of mechanical and industrial equipment
- Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organization, documentation, and attention to detail
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Ability to collaborate with field teams, contractors, and vendors
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical preferred) from an ABET-accredited program
- OR
- Engineering degree from a non-ABET program plus a Professional Engineering (PE) License
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 4+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience.
- Experience in a power utility, refinery, or heavy industrial environment strongly preferred.
- Background with mechanical systems such as pumps, heat exchangers, boilers, turbines, and water systems is beneficial.
