We’re on a mission to deliver riveting storytelling for all of America. At The Washington Post, you’ll help reinvent news. Our work is driven by a deep investigative spirit and enhanced by innovation to bring audiences closer to the stories that matter most.
About Our Team
The Washington Post is powered by the passion and talent of our people. It takes all of us to reinvent news. Beyond our award-winning Newsroom and Opinions teams, we work across many departments, including Brand & Events, Communications, Customer Care, Engineering & Product, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing & Advertising, Print Operations, and Sales.
Why This Role Matters
The Washington Post is seeking a creative and versatile social video editor to help drive visual storytelling across our social platforms.
We’re looking for an editor who understands how journalism travels on social media — and how to shape it for audiences who expect immediacy, personality and clarity. This role will identify and create high-impact news video as well as work with Post journalists to create social-first video that resonates across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Snapchat, X and emerging platforms.
The ideal candidate is fluent in shooting and editing vertical video, deeply familiar with platform best practices and energized by the challenge of translating rigorous reporting into compelling short-form storytelling. This editor will be part of a team focused on producing high-impact video for both The Post’s owned-and-operated platforms and social ecosystems, helping grow reach, engagement and brand loyalty.
This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.
What Motivates You
- You are excited about meeting audiences where they are and experimenting with new storytelling formats.
- You enjoy collaborating with reporters and helping them sharpen their on-camera voice.
- You thrive in a fast-paced environment where speed and accuracy both matter.
- You are energized by tracking performance and iterating to improve results.
- You care deeply about journalistic standards, even in short-form and highly visual formats.
How You’ll Support the Mission
- Shoot and edit vertical video optimized for social viewing, ensuring strong hooks, pacing and clarity.
- Partner with Post journalists to create personality-driven, social-first videos tailored for Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Snapchat and other platforms, grounded in Post standards and social media policies.
- Collaborate with editors, producers and designers across the newsroom to refine the look, voice and tone of social video.
- Evaluate engagement metrics regularly, track performance and adapt production strategies to maximize audience growth and interaction.
- Coach journalists on best practices for creating effective social-first video, including scripting, framing and delivery.
- Write accurate scripts, headlines, captions and metadata that enhance discoverability and engagement.
The Skills and Experiences You Bring
- At least two years of experience in a professional newsroom.
- At least three years of video editing experience.
- Strong proficiency in Adobe Premiere and comfort managing the full social publishing pipeline.
- Demonstrated speed and precision in video editing for deadline-driven environments.
- Experience publishing to major social platforms and a deep understanding of vertical video best practices.
- Strong news judgment, attention to detail and commitment to fact-checking and accuracy.
- Ability to write clear, compelling scripts and social copy quickly.
- Experience in audience engagement and working across multiple social platforms.
- A demonstrated ability to use analytics to inform editorial and production decisions.
- Experience producing video in the field, including operating camera equipment, lighting and audio setups.
- A track record of creative and distinctive work on social media platforms.
Interested candidates should upload a cover letter and résumé to our jobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by Apr. 10 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Social Media Director Keely Diven and Managing Editor for Content Strategy Bryan Flaherty.
The salary range for this position is $82,600.00 - $123,800.00. The actual starting salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
Collaboration makes us stronger. That’s why our offices are designed with open layouts, modern technology, and easy access to transportation. With certain exceptions for newsgathering and business travel, we work on-site five days a week.
