Executive Director – Harmonium Choral Society

Location: Morristown, NJ | Hours: ~30/week, hybrid, some evenings/weekends

About Harmonium

Harmonium Choral Society (“Harmonium” or “the Chorus”) is one of New Jersey’s leading choral arts organizations. Founded in 1979, our 100-member chorus and select 24-voice Chamber Singers are committed volunteers, including many music educators. Membership is by audition.

Mission: To perform a diverse repertoire of choral music and to offer innovative, inclusive programming, collaborations, educational opportunities, and community partnerships, while creating challenging and uplifting experiences where excellence flourishes.

Vision: To inspire and enrich our community through the shared experience of excellent choral performance and the advancement of the choral art.

Position Overview

The Executive Director (ED) provides hands-on leadership and coordination of Harmonium’s operations, programs, and strategic initiatives. Working with the Board, Artistic Director, committee chairs, volunteers, and limited part-time contractors, the ED ensures smooth operations, effective fundraising, marketing, and community engagement.

This flexible ~30-hour/week role combines strategic oversight with direct operational involvement, including some evenings, weekends, and on-site work.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Programs

● Oversee logistics of concerts, rehearsals, and programming.

● Manage membership processes, communications, and contracts with venues/service providers.

● Coordinate volunteers and troubleshoot operational challenges.

● Serve as the main point of contact for members and public inquiries.

Fundraising & Development

● Implement the fundraising plan developed with the Fund Development Committee (FDC).

● Support donor campaigns and stewardship, manage the CRM, and generate reports.

● Secure sponsorships and cultivate corporate, foundation, and individual giving.

● Assist with annual fundraising events, including the committee-led cabaret.

Marketing & Community Engagement

● Oversee marketing plan implementation: press releases, advertising, brochures, digital listings, and ticketing.

● Coordinate social media strategy through the consultant.

● Develop and maintain relationships with schools, arts organizations, and community partners.

● Represent Harmonium publicly, with Board/Artistic Director support.

Board & Governance

● Support strategic planning, reporting, and committee coordination.

● Assist with board recruitment and volunteer engagement.

Finance & Administration

● Support budgeting, expense tracking, and day-to-day financial operations with Treasurer.

● Ensure compliance with tax and reporting requirements.

Additional Responsibilities

● Lead by example in hands-on operational tasks.

● Perform other duties as assigned by the Board to support the mission.

Qualifications

● Self-motivated, hands-on, collaborative, and able to balance strategic leadership with day-to-day operations.

● Strong problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

● Comfort with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, ticketing systems, and managing a CRM database.

Preferred

● Bachelor’s degree; 3–5 years in arts administration, performing arts management, or nonprofit leadership.

● Fundraising, marketing, and financial management experience.

● Knowledge of choral music and performing arts a plus

Compensation & Application

● Salary range $40,000-$45,000.

● Priority hire; goal of starting by or before May 1, 2026 for overlap with current ED.
