Job description

Piper Companies is seeking a Utilities Engineer to join a strong gene therapy undergoing significant laboratory renovations and facility modifications for an onsite contract engagement based out of Durham, NC. The Utilities Engineer will support the expansion of a 3,000 sq. ft. lab area turning over in August, assisting engineering teams with documentation cleanup, utility verification, and integration of updated drawings and tags following several years of rapid facility growth.

Responsibilities of the Utilities Engineer include

  • Conduct field walkdowns to verify existing utilities, perform P&ID redlines, and identify discrepancies between drawings and real‑world conditions
  • Support cleanup and development of a comprehensive utility tag list across lab and GMP‑adjacent areas
  • Assist with documenting utilities modifications tied to lab reconfiguration, autoclave installation, cold room addition, and system tie‑ins
  • Reconcile historical documentation gaps and incorporate updated drawings reflecting facility changes over the past four years
  • Partner with engineering, facilities, and maintenance teams to ensure accurate utilities records and drawing updates
  • Support utilities engineering bandwidth by helping track and update changes across mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and controls systems

Qualifications for the Utilities Engineer include

  • Understanding of utilities such as HVAC, chilled water, process water, steam, electrical systems, or instrumentation
  • Experience with P&ID walkdowns, redlining, and field verification activities
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage large volumes of documentation and tagging updates
  • Comfortable working across engineering, maintenance, and lab operations teams
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, facilities, or a related technical discipline preferred

Compensation for the Utilities Engineer

  • Salary Range: $160,000–$180,000/year
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, sick leave as required by law, and 401(k)
