Job description

What we do

SpaceRake is pioneering the development of cutting-edge optical communication hardware, designed to connect platforms of any size and make data more accessible to all. SpaceRake’s optical communications hardware is set to revolutionize data transport, offering high volumes of data transmission with low latency on small platforms across domains from orbit to the ground. We are headquartered in Watertown, MA.

Mechanical/Optomechanical Engineer

SpaceRake, Inc. is currently looking for a mechanical (optomechanical preferred) engineer to join our team and help us build our laser communications hardware. You will work with a small team to help define and deliver the company’s prototype products. We’re looking for a creative individual that likes to work in a highly-cross-disciplinary team and is able to execute on hardware deliverables.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the team to develop our laser communications systems
  • Design and iterate on optomechanical assemblies for mobile platform-based lasercom terminals and optical ground stations
  • Rapidly prototype hardware using a mix of traditional machining, 3D printing, and off-the-shelf components to validate mechanical and optical concepts
  • Manage full-lifecycle CAD development within Onshape
  • Perform optical alignment and characterization (if experienced) or collaborate closely with the optics team to ensure build meets pointing and stability requirements
  • Collaborate across domains to bridge the gap between mechanical, optical, electrical, and software subsystems. There are lots of areas to branch out if desired
  • Perform environmental and site testing of lasercom systems
  • Help us build a positive and inclusive culture

Required Skills and Experiences

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, optical engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of proven experience
  • Proven track record of building and prototyping. Hands-on experience taking a concept from a sketch to a physical, functional hardware system
  • Proficiency in CAD (Onshape preferred)
  • Proficiency in 3D printing, machining, and other fabrication methods
  • Creative thinker and problem solver with an ability to break down complex problems into simple, implementable solutions
  • Multidisciplinary curiosity and a willingness to learn or contribute to optics, electronics, firmware, software, or systems engineering
  • High-quality verbal and written communication skills
  • Due to ITAR/CUI regulations, applicants must be U.S. Persons

Nice-to-Haves

  • Hands-on experience building, aligning, and characterizing free-space optical (FSO) systems, including precision mounting of mirrors, lenses, and lasers
  • Experience with Zemax
  • Experience with Python, C, C++, or ROS for controlling actuators, sensors, or automated test rigs
  • Familiarity with UAV hardware, gimbal stabilization, or SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power) optimization
  • Part 107 FAA License

What we offer

A supportive and dynamic work environment and an opportunity to help create a meaningful product.

Our benefits include

  • Competitive salary
  • Company stock options
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance coverage
  • 401(k) plan and matching
