Role and Responsibilities
The Produce and Perishables Manager is responsible for leading all perishable departments, including produce, fresh and packaged meats, dairy, frozen foods, bread, and thaw-and-sell bakery products. Reporting directly to the Store Manager, this role ensures accurate inventory management, food safety compliance, effective merchandising, and exceptional customer service.
- Supervise daily operations of perishable categories such as produce, dairy, meats, frozen, and bakery.
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels by utilizing vendor schedules, order guides, and sales data.
- Enforce food handling, sanitation, and safety standards in compliance with regulations.
- Train and mentor associates on product rotation, merchandising practices, and safe food handling.
- Track markdown activity, review results, and apply corrective measures to minimize shrink and waste.
- Assist with scheduling, cash handling, and store safety procedures.
- Work alongside the Store Manager to uphold operational policies and company standards.
- Validate inventory accuracy and support reporting requirements to the Store Support Center.
- Deliver excellent customer service by responding to inquiries and resolving concerns effectively.
- Ensure perishable areas are clean, organized, and compliant with store sanitation schedules.
- Provide additional support with overall store operations and team supervision as needed.
Required Skills and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year of retail experience required.
- 6 months or more of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Background in grocery or perishable department operations is a plus.
- Ability to obtain state or local food handling certifications as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of perishable merchandising and inventory management practices.
- Ability to interpret operating procedures, diagrams, and safety manuals.
- Proficiency in basic math for preparing and analyzing sales and inventory reports.
- Understanding of cash control processes and loss prevention strategies.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to train and guide team members in compliance and safety standards.
