Job description

NOTICE OF VACANCY

March 12, 2026

POSITION: Extended School Year (ESY) Teacher/Related Service Provider – Individual

Extended School Year (ESY) Teacher – School-Based (Group Instruction)

Available teacher positions include K-12 and Infant-Toddler (Birth – 5 years old)

Position availability is contingent on student enrollment. Those interested are entered into a “pool” of providers. Providers’ expertise and area(s) of interest are then matched to the special education student’s area of needed instruction. Responsibilities include instruction on specified Individualized Education Program (IEP) / Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) goals/objectives, maintaining and reporting data on attendance and progress, contact with parents to arrange sessions and planning.

DESCRIPTION OF INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION FOR ESY SERVICES: Students for ESY are identified through the IEP process as being eligible for services. Students are also identified through the IFSP process as part of year-round services. Specific objectives are targeted for instruction to maintain the student’s performance level over the summer break. The range of objectives could include academic skills, communication skills, and social/behavior-related skills. Service required to meet the students’ needs may include class instruction, speech/language therapy, occupational/physical therapy, vision, audiology, or orientation/mobility services. Although the amount of service for Calvert County Public Schools’ (CCPS) students can range from one half-hour a week to one to two hours each day, four days a week over a period of four to seven weeks, ESY services most typically run an hour each session once or twice a week over five weeks. The provider has the flexibility to arrange the schedule for service provision with the parent, within the specifications of the IEP. Individualized ESY services are primarily provided at a school, but on rare occasions it could be provided in a daycare or community setting. An adult must be present at the time of service. Once a schedule is set, providers must make up sessions if they cancel, however they are not required to make up sessions that are cancelled by the parent. If it is appropriate for the student, services may be provided virtually. It is anticipated that CCPS will need approximately 20 and 30 teachers. The expected number of related service providers will be dependent on individual requirements of the IEP/IFSP. Dates of service will vary depending on the requirements of the IEP/IFSP.

DESCRIPTION OF CLASSROOM-BASED INSTRUCTION OF ESY SERVICES: Classroom-based ESY services support students with complex disabilities who benefit from continued instructional routines and structures from the regular school year. Instruction typically emphasizes social engagement, communication, behavioral supports, and progress toward each student’s targeted ESY objectives. Class sizes generally include five to seven students, with one or two instructional assistants assigned based on individual student needs. The schedule is provided below. CCPS anticipates the need for approximately 10–15 teachers to support these classrooms.

SCHOOL BASED SERVICE DATES/LOCATION: Applicants interested in School-based Group Instruction should be available for the entire duration of the ESY/Comp/Recovery services. These services will be held at Calvert Elementary School and/or a centrally located school for 6 weeks.
